Russia is located in Northern Asia bordering the Arctic Ocean, between Europe and the North Pacific Ocean. Russia has an area of 17,098,240 sq. km. with an approximate population of 144 million.

Formerly the dominant republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia is now an independent country, and an influential member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. For most westerners, Russia is associated with its European cities - Moscow, St. Petersburg and Murmansk. This is the heartland of Imperial Russia, and these great and ancient cities are often the focus for most tourists.
